A “small prince” for seashore disaster
      Hsiao Shou-Ming, director of Pingtung County Seashore Disaster Rescue Association, physically disabled in his childhood, and walked by wheelchair. He learnt by himself without going to school, and showed a strong ability in speaking and writing. As he witnessed several traffic accidents in the coastal areas and some drowning events, he established Pingtung County Seashore Disaster Rescue Association 8 years ago, which assisted the police departments in handling 644 cases. During 9.21 Earthquake, he led 45 volunteers to plunge into the rescue operations in Puli, Chushan and Lugu. He also set up a wireless channel “small prince” for rescue of marine disasters.
       The “small prince” initiated by Hsiao Shou-Ming was highly recognized by domestic rescue organizations, and also taken as a special line for disaster rescue operations. However, Hsiao Shou-Ming experienced many hardships during his growth-up.
      Hsiao Shou-Ming, born in 1959. At about 6, 7 years old, he fell down in an accident and his spinal nerve was severely hurt when he played with his little pals one time, some of them fished slinkingly, and had to run away after being discovered. He didn’t dare tell his parents, leading to delay of medical treatment and paralysis. Unfortunately, his father along with other two fishermen disappeared due to an unexpected sea disaster in a fishing operation.
      His family was stuck into a series of strikes. But, with the diligent work of other brothers and his mother Li Yuan-Yang, this family could afford make a living, but couldn’t purchase a wheelchair for Hsiao Shou-Ming, who had to give up going to school.
      Hsiao Shou-Ming said, “monochrome TV is my first teacher”. With this teacher, he learnt the ability of writing and speaking with mandarin.
      He was deeply touched when he witnessed a rescue operation from a traffic accident a few years ago. In view of the frequent traffic accidents, drowning events along this long coastal line, it occurred to him that a rescue organization shall be set up to make contributions in this respect.
      Thus, Hsiao Shou-Ming set up Pingtung County Seashore Disaster Rescue Association in cooperation with a group of like-minded friends. As a director of this organization, Hsiao Shou-Ming often rushed to the rescue site. In addition to emergency rescue missions, 60 members also made donations to local public welfare activities, and assisted the schools and groups in training of over-water lifesaving, diving and oral resuscitation, etc.
