Not defected by disabilities and disasters
Li, Li, a Distinguished Professor of the College of Public Administration, Hunan Normal University, has not been defeated by disabilities, poverty, and disasters, and she insists on growing up with her life.

Li is abandoned by fate, but she sings out her inner spirit into mighty songs. She pioneered in the psychological poverty alleviation campaign and launched the “Fuxin Project” to enrich the hearts of millions upon millions of people.

Over the past 17 years, Li has continuously warmed hundreds of millions of cold-hearted people, letting everyone to accept and extend their infinite possibilities of positive energy. Everyone will never forget that she suffered from polio at one year old, and has never stood up since then.

Everyone will never forget that at the age of 40, she encountered a car accident and conducted more than 40 minor and major operations successively. The lower part of her body is completely paralyzed since then. For everyone she meets, she shares her heartfelt words: “Everyone has only seen 1% of my success, but hasn’t seen 99% of my failures. Everyone has only seen 1% of my happiness, but hasn’t seen 99% of my sufferings.”

Someone presented her with six laurel crowns, saying that she is a physiological “absolute patient,” a psychologically “absolutely superhuman,” an “absolute woman” in life, an “absolute strong woman” in her career, a spiritual “absolutely giant,” and an “absolutely kind-hearted person” in society.

Whereby, Li, Li treats setbacks as a passbook and turns disabilities into resources. She founded Li Li Spiritual Education Center and created a charity development center to accompany thousands upon thousands of people to say goodbye to the haze and greet the sun. She won the CCTV 2007 Touching China Awards and deserves to be praised as an “Inspirational Angel,” and stood out among 2,723 recommended candidates from all over the world and earned her the “22nd Fervent Global Love of Lives Award 2019” from Taiwan’s Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation.

Inspirational angel in a wheelchair
She is a disabled person with practically innate disabilities and has to be accompanied by a wheelchair for life. However, she is harmonious, having it written in her eyes, face, and gestures, and inscribed in her depth of action that has touched the world for many years.

This harmony has become the pervasiveness and penetration power, rising from the cold wheelchair, benefiting the surrounding people, moving a country, and moving a world.

Just like harmonious China, it brings a similar harmonious concept in world cooperation, civilization, humanity, and equality.

The selection committee member, Wang Zhen-Yao of The Touching China commented on Li: We feel the power of love from Li’s story, and Li has also proved that no matter how ordinary and no matter how weak you are, if you’re tireless and dedicated to love, you’ll definitely be able to promote the broad morality of society.

Another selection committee member, Yu Dan of The Touching China wrote this while recommending Li: A weak body but a strong mindset, this coordinate serves as a reminder to too many non-disabled people. Let us be more introspective, realizing that the sincerity and kindness of the soul are boundless.

Li, a female member of the Zhi Gong Party, was born in Hengyang City, Hunan Province on October 19, 1962. She had served the posts of Changsha Union of Overseas Chinese Association, the Vice Chairman of the Tianxin District Overseas Chinese Federation of Changsha City, the representative of the 13th National People’s Congress of Hunan Province, the person in charge of Li Li Spiritual Education Center of Hunan, the founder of Lechuang Charity Development Center of Hunan, and the Distinguished Professor of the College of Public Administration of Hunan Normal University.

In 1963, a terrible fate fell on Li, who was only one year old then. As a result of polio, she has become a disabled person with fully paralyzed limbs from below the psoas muscle. From then on, let alone standing and walking, she cannot even sit steadily. At the age of seven, Li bitterly endured more than 40 unforgettable and painstakingly catgut surgeries and moved out her first step in life.

Early 1991: Due to the downturn of the unit’s economic benefit, Li found her means of livelihood by doing document printing, selling dumplings, posing cigarette stall, knitting sweaters, and did many other things for several years.
1993: Li borrowed money to purchase a small state-owned gas station that was on the verge of bankruptcy.
1999: She tried to raise funds and invested $3 million RMB in expanding the scale of the original gas station into an integrated unit that included fueling, accommodation, and catering.
2001: With help from her family and friends, she founded Gaofu Green Garden and Horticulture Co., Ltd., determining to be the most professional garden design company in the local area.
May 27, 2002: She went to Ganzhou on a business trip and met a car accident that ruthlessly deprived her of the right to walk even a few steps with the help of a cane.

However, due to the state’s macro-control of the fuel market, and coupled with some relevant policies formulated by the petroleum system, the petrol station has no in-sale price difference and quickly lost its viability. The business painstakingly managed by Li vanished once again.

“If you still have your heart, the dreams will be with you, only that you have to start all over again.” Calmed down and thought hard, Li set off again despite carrying huge debts on her shoulder.

After the car accident, her body was torn in many pieces. Due to her lack of coagulation factor, she had the symptom of continuous bleeding with only 2g of blood left in her body. Her face was stitched intensively with 89 needles, and the joints of her left leg were broken. She was implanted with three steel plates inside her weak body, and even her two hands could not escape the bad luck and completely lost their self-care ability.

The doctor told her unabashedly: “After you leave the hospital, learn to write with your left hand.”
Facing yet another blow of bad luck, she did not shed a tear and had only one thought in her mind. “March forward, you can do it!”
She invited an excellent masseur to help herself, doing an hour of rehabilitation every day and forcibly helping her to straighten her five fingers.
At that time, Li’s entire body was sweating, the whole nerve system in her body was in pains, and even the facial muscles cramped involuntarily.

She still clenched her teeth, letting the beliefs and pains to face each other, and seeing who the last winner was. A miracle finally happened. After half a year of hard work, she could bundle her hair to let herself look prettier.

For the past 56 years, after surviving the perils, disabilities, poverty, disasters, she has not been beaten and worn down.
The most difficult and valuable thing is that Li has turned all sufferings into a love action, benefitting thousands upon thousands of the vulnerable group.

In the blink of an eye, 12 years have passed since Li won this national honor. Perhaps someone may ask where is The Touching China’s character is faring now? Has she become a successful figure? Has she vanished? Has she thrived in the initial public welfare undertakings? If you search in Baidu for “Hunan Li Li,” it will show a million pieces of information, more than two-thirds of which were her work undertakings since receiving the honors more than a decade ago. Li has launched large-scale public welfare cases known as the “Fuxin Project,” “She spiritually inspires thousands of children each year,” and many more. It is not difficult to find that Li has always been thriving on the road of charity and is doing even more incredibly well.

Turns disabilities into resources to help others
Anyone familiar with Li’s life experience knows that her “story” is full of mishaps: she is ill-fated, suffered from polio at the age of one, has never stood up since childhood, done more than 40 operations successively to get rid of the illness, but finally got a “standing” life.

However, in her 40s in 2002, she had a car accident. Her face was stitched intensively with 89 stitches, her left leg broken into three pieces, her soft body implanted with six steel plates, and her lower body completely paralyzed.

Faced yet another blow of bad luck, it did not drag her down. Her mind firmly believed in one thought: Li, you must continue to march forward!

More than 40 years of twists and turns have allowed Li to understand the book of life. She always motivates herself to: “treat setbacks as a passbook, enjoy the sufferings, change failures into wealth, and turn disabilities into resources.”

For these “laurel crowns,” Li said they are just a name given to her by an era, and it is also a milestone of her life.

At the beginning of 2003, recently being discharged from the hospital, Li rode on a wheelchair to prison in Hunan Province to discuss the garden business. Touched by Li’s unceasingly striving experience, the prison governor invited her to give a life lesson to the prisoners.

In the face of more than 2,000 prisoners, Li poured out these words: “You’ve only seen 1% of my success, but you haven’t seen 99% of my failures. You’ve seen only 1% of my happiness, but you haven’t known 99% of my sufferings."

“You are imprisoned by a knot in your heart, but I am imprisoned within my body. As long as you make a good transformation, there’s always a day of freedom. Compared to my life imprisonment, you’re happier!”

Li has practiced the prison mentorship career for many years. Some people do not understand her, but some people are full of gratitude.

Li said: “In those years when I got in close contact with the prisoners, some people didn’t understand what I’m doing.”

In their view, the prison is a specific place to punish crimes. It’s an edge zone of the civilized society, why do you want to be associated with it? My answer is straightforward. The overall social harmony comes from every corner. Without any of them, it’s impossible to achieve a truly complete and comprehensive beauty of harmony.

It happened that the imprisoned people are all marginalized people of society. It’s the weakest and most challenging corner of building a harmonious society, a place that exactly needs to be illuminated by the sun, moistened by the rain and dew, and ignited by the fire of life.

After the lecture in Zhangzhou Prison, the Governor of Zhangzhou Prison in Hunan Province wrote a letter of appreciation to Li, saying that: “Li, you’re a strong, kind-hearted, wise, and beautiful woman. Because of you, the prisoners have a sense of belonging in their souls, and the people who like to commit suicide and self-mutilation have greatly reduced!”

In the past few years, through letters of mentorship, more than 10 prisoners such as Xiang Xiang have received a commutation of sentences under your encouragement, and have been rated as “transformed activists” by the prison system. More prisoners have gained spiritual renewal. Our prison has also established the Li Li Volunteer Love Foundation, named after you, to donate money to the impoverished people.

After repeated interactions with the prisoners, she unexpectedly received letters from many prisoners.
They expressed regret for their past behaviors to Li in tears.
In this way, Li has become the intimate sister in the hearts of the prisoners.

In the following two years, she went to dozens of prisons in Hunan, Shaanxi, Tianjin, and other places to give lectures. The audiences have reached more than 40,000 people, and she has received more than 1,000 letters from the prisoners. She took time off in the evening to reply to them one by one.

When sorting out the letters from the prisoners, Li was shocked to find that a failure in family education was the cause for 98% of them to commit the crimes. Their spiritual balances were prematurely tilted as early as adolescence.

During that time, she tossed and turned in bed and could not sleep at night. She felt there was yet another vital task than the “prison mentorship,” that is, to engage in spiritual education and family education to save the lost children.

Rooted Family 110 in the community to serve the adolescents
Just after the Spring Festival in 2004, Li made an important decision in her life. She gave up her business and devoted herself to social welfare services. Accompanied by a wheelchair, she went to Beijing to study for more than a year.

In 2005, she returned from school and integrated a group of psychologists to establish the “Hengyang Li Li Family Education Studio.” Her service object is apparent, that is to carry out mandatory psychological counseling and crisis intervention for the adolescents who are lost.

Help phones often burst late at night. Once when Li raised the phone, she heard Xiao Shao’s mother said tearfully: Oh God! Please save me. My son is fighting with his father, and they all have knives. Xiao Shao was a school dropout. His mother had come to ask for help before. Today, he’s fighting with his father. Anxious, Li immediately went to coordinate and ease the incident. After that, that parent said emotionally: You’re really “Family 110!”

In 2010, Li moved to Changsha to develop public welfare from scratch.

In April, Changsha suffered a super humid spring. Li also encountered a setback in her career. Unfamiliar with the local environment, the entrepreneurs who initially expressed support withdrew their promises due to development hurdles of the enterprise. Originally planned to expand the enterprise extensively, Li felt as if a big tree had been uprooted ruthlessly. Without the soil, the plant is dying.

Struggling to survive, Li actively adjusted herself mentality. She went around for a long time under the scorching sun to seek breakthroughs everywhere.

Even in the face of difficulties and hardships, she still received calls for help from all over the country, and the Guangxi girl “Ling Ling” was one of them.

The girl tried hard to reach “Mother Li,” confiding that she faced tremendous stress and suppression of the college entrance exam and felt psychological confusion for many years. She worried all day long and had a suicidal idea many times.

Saving your heart is more important than keeping your life! Feeling the seriousness of the child’s problem, Li agreed to talk to her at 9 o’clock every night to find a psychological support point for her. Each call would last more than an hour, inspiring her to move on from a self-recognition and retrospective approach to achieve self-management and self-motivation.

After nearly a month of follow-up counseling, Ling Ling’s fate turned, and she successfully passed the university exam two months later.

Li wants more children like Ling Ling to find “intimate people” and receive professional psychological counseling.

In September of the same year, Li overcame the “unaccustomed climate.” Hunan Li Li Spiritual Education Center was registered in the Provincial Civil Affairs Department and rooted at Xiangyuan community in Changsha City.

Spreads the positive energy of “Chinese Kinship” intensively
To play an active role in the overseas Chinese’s “Chinese Kinship” and spread the positive energy of the society, Li launched the “Chinese Kinship” Li Li Thematic Speech Hunan Tour activity in September 2010 with strong support from the Hunan Union of Overseas Chinese Association. The event aimed to equip young people with ethical values, worldviews, and outlook in life.

As of December 2017, with the collaboration of the Overseas Chinese Association at all levels, Li held 56 lectures in some schools, state-owned enterprises, prisons, communities, and rural areas in the province, where more than 52,000 audiences attended the events, and more than 5,400 copies of “Chinese Kinship” thematic propagation data were distributed.

Li’s tour has covered the cities of Changsha, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, Loudi, Zhangzhou, and Shaoyang.

Over the past three years, Li has always adhered to the front line of the tour, and the masses praised it as “work in the present, benefit in the future.”

In 2012, Hunan Li Li Spiritual Education Center was jointly recognized by the Hunan Union of Overseas Chinese Association and the Provincial Department of Culture, which praised Chinese Kinship thermic speech activity as an “Excellent Organizational Unit.”

Li said that she would continue to promote the “Chinese Kinship” Li Li Thematic Speech Hunan Tour activity. She would use her little strength to make a new contribution to the harmonious Hunan.

Initiated the “Fuxin Project” to alleviate poverty and enrich more people spiritually
The five new development concepts of “sharing” adhere great importance to public services and livelihood security. The strategic deployment of “poverty alleviation” in the “13^th Five-Year Plan” is the highest common denominator of this concept. 

The overall situation of this work, besides the relevant departments of various levels of the government and various forms of enterprises to play their role, the 650,000 social organizations across the country are also a vital force and innovation engine that cannot be ignored. They focus on active practice and exploration of the new concept of “sharing.” 

The “Fuxin Project” implemented by Li and her team is a positive response to pay attention to poverty alleviation, socialist core value ​​education, and ideological and moral construction of the juveniles.

She accurately pinpointed the “juvenile group,” especially orphans, dropouts, migrant children, etc. The project is dedicated to the psychological supplement of calcium for juveniles, helping them to achieve spiritual wealth, and promoting “psychological poverty alleviation” as a new normal.

“Mr. Wan, we’re the ones who should thank you. You’ve changed the children and us.”

“We’ve many words of thanks, but anyway, these children would be grateful to you forever! On their way to growth, you’ve demonstrated a high-spirited, rich, and colorful role!”

These are text messages sent to Li’s colleague, Wan-Qiang on August 25, 2015, by Deng Xiang-Jun, the Principle of Hope Primary School of Taihetang Township, Jidong County, Hengyang City on the day when the “Fuxin Project” ended at the School Dropout Public Welfare Summer Camp in Guanaishan District.

There are still many stories like these.

At present, there are 18 million juveniles in Hunan, including 1.2 million school dropouts.

From April 2010 to January 2017, the “Fuxin Project” had integrated the actual needs of the difficult groups. It had spread to Changsha, Hengyang, Yongzhou, Zhangzhou, Loudi, Xiangxi, Shaoyang, and other nine cities and states, and directly served more than 18,000 juveniles in the particular group, which caused a tremendous social impact.

The “Fuxin Project” was awarded the “3rd Hunan Charity Award” by the Hunan Provincial Civil Affairs Department in 2015. The institution founded by Li was awarded the “National Advanced Social Organization” by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the “Sharing Project” was granted as a provincial demonstration base by the Hunan Provincial Party Committee.

Li received “The Touching China” character in 2007, the 2007 China Charity Award Nomination Award, the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games Torchbearer, the 2008 National March 8th Red Banner Holder Nominee Award, and the 2009 National Returned Overseas Chinese Outstanding Person, the 2nd National Moral Model Nomination Award, the 2012 National Outstanding Volunteer Award, among others.

“My Chinese dream is to become a respected helper,” Li said.
In the cause of her spiritual mentorship career, she has found a spiritual home and explored with infinite power.
In the individual sense, Li has become a great high-spirited group, spreading the seeds of love all the way, and singing the charity songs all the way!

Li’s heartfelt words:
Enjoy the sufferings, treat setbacks as a passbook, turn disabilities into resources, and change failures into wealth.
The quality of the mother determines the future of the children!
If the child is sick, the parents are the ones who suffer.
If the parents study hard, the children will thrive every day.
If the parents change their minds, their children will be easier to communicate!

The parents should turn nagging into questioning.
If life has a season, there is no restart for growth.
If there is poor communication between the parents and children, the parents must have no wisdom and realm of communication with them!
Don’t blame the children for not obedient, it is because the parents are too fond of saying nonsense.

If the children’s behavior deviates and the parents do not know how to educate them, please treat your children as a teacher and ask them the solving methods.
Success does not end because of failure, but because of quitting.
If the parents don’t know how to find out and appreciate, there will be no praises!
Human talent is born innately that basically cannot change. Personality is acquired knowledge that can be changed completely! The others’ faces can act as a mirror to determine the quality of the character.

Don’t keep correcting your children’s behaviors, you must understand their thoughts instead. Thoughts are flowers, and behaviors are fruits. If one’s opinion has changed, one’s behavior will change immediately.
Education should not despise the poor and curry favor with the rich. We must do everything we can to give the help seekers the instructions they need, allowing all parents and children who come into our institution to have a feeling of “homeward bound.”

Our staff members are like farmers who do daily sowing work but not changing people.
The main cause of causing “problem children” is a lack of family emotion feeling and misconduct of family education.
Parents’ willingness to change is the beginning of a happy harvest, and it is the beginning of pain for refusing to change.
Spiritually speaking, people get richer when they contribute more, but poorer when they ask for more.
A person who only cares about his happiness and does not consider the feelings of others will come to a dead end.

You must learn to choose in life. If you choose to live, your life will get richer and colorful! If you have a choice, you have a role and responsibility.
To educate a child well is a test if the parents have a loving heart or not, not if they are patient or not.
When a child makes a mistake, don’t criticize the child.
Children who learn the “discipline rules” well will not generate psychological problems.
Conceit and inferiority are twins. If you are too conceited, it will make you lose your talent.

People who understand love will own the real meaning of success!
The confusion of modern parents: give birth to a boy but afraid he will learn bad behaviors, and give birth to a girl and scared to see her getting hurt.
We must respect every life that is born out of love.
Three seeds for the parents: gratefulness, tolerance, and thought.
The teacher teaches students to learn knowledge, and the parents teach the children to have wisdom.

The most common mistake people make is self-righteous!
In life, what you can afford to lose is money, and what you can’t miss is the mindset.
I like children with independent thoughts. Once your ideas are accepted by someone, you will be treated “obediently.”
Some people’s self-confidence is constructed on ignorance.
The peace of our hearts and the happiness we get in life are not where we are, what we have, who we are, but our state of mind at this moment, which has little to do with the outside world.

The credit always belongs to someone else, and mistake always belongs to you.
If the direction is correct, you will get the victory for persistence! If the path is wrong, stop is instead progressing!
If you cultivate good habits, you will be rewarded for life. If you don’t develop good habits, you will suffer for life.

Life is only beautiful if you strive, and there is no glory if you wait for it.
If one always holds on to one’s disappointment, it undoubtedly means that one is virtually putting on a spiritual shackle over one’s neck.

Maturity is gained through experience, not ages – ages are traceless, but the experience is eternal!
It is more important to do the right thing than to do things right!
There are no beautiful angels in the world, only kind-hearted women.
The meaning of life is not what we get, but what we have learned.
Only those who know how to stop will know how to speed things up.

The pain in learning is temporary, and the pain for not learning is lifelong.
The art of teaching is not about education, but about encouragement, awakening, and inspiring.
For people who don’t have a fixed goal in life, his words and deeds are easily affected by emotions that even a trivial matter will bother him.
The key to one’s ideal life and happiness is one’s excellent personal quality and right working attitude. 

In human’s growth, what really count are guts. We must lay out our guts in proper manners.
This world belongs neither to the rich nor the powerful, but to the good-hearted people.
The first-class people have the ability and do not have a temper; the middle-class people have the talent but have a temper; the last-class people have no expertise and have a terrible temper.
If you refuse to fail, it means that you are giving up success!
Nothing can save a person who has no self-help consciousness. What is the “sweet spring water” in our life? The answer is emotional intelligence.

Failures and setbacks are normally revealed to the people in a “mute language.” If you don’t treat it seriously and endure them, you will not be able to understand “success.”
God gives genius achievements, but ordinary people need to exchange professionalism with accomplishments.
A person’s life is a long march with faith.
What is happiness? For me, I have an unhealthy body but a good heart because I pay no attention to old grievances.
