Mainland Chinese Computer Wizard – Li, Xiao-Guang)
[A Patent Application Champion Rising from the Ashes]
Even if I’ve one finger left to move, I will undoubtedly complete my R&D dreams. Although I’m physically handicapped, I’m a “normal person” like everyone.
- Li, Xiao-Guang

Turning disabilities into scientific miracles
Li, Xiao-Guang, an R&D engineer at Foxconn Technology Group, is a scientific research miracle that has combined the king of invention, a patent tycoon, a person who suffered from 76% severe burn over his body, right foot lameness, one knuckle left on both hands, and severe disabilities into one body.

The 45-year-old Chongqing warrior Xiao-Guang would never forget the fire in Shenzhen 23 years ago. His parents were killed in the fire, he suffered from 76% severe burns over his body, his right foot could only limp, and both his hands had burned down to only one knuckle left.

Not only does he never give up, he is especially grateful to the President of Foxconn Technology Group, Terry Guo, for his generous cultivation, allowing him to work hard without any worries. He relies his single-finger writing ability to complete writing programs in consumer electronics products, human engineering, environmental protection, energy-saving, and autonomous driving fields, winning more than 200 authorized patents in China, the United States, and other countries from official intellectual property offices, with an accumulated economic value exceeding $10 billion RMB.

Xiao-Guang was awarded the patent application champion from Foxconn Technology Group for four consecutive years from 2005 to 2008 and received $1 million RMB from President Guo.

Silently helping the vulnerable groups
The most valuable thing is that Xiao-Guang holds a self-helping attitude to help others to help themselves. He especially has the same feelings for the vulnerable groups in various fields, regardless of natural disasters, rescues, poverty, etc. He silently led a helping hand to sustainably support the Guizhou flood-helping hero Li King-Long, the poverty-stricken college student Wang Hou-Lan, the vulnerable cancer-fighting kid, etc.

Xiao-Guang says to everyone he meets: “Even if I’ve one finger left to move, I’ll undoubtedly complete my R&D dreams. Although I’m physically handicapped, I’m a “normal person” like everyone.

Now, Xiao-Guang has a warm family of three. His wife Liu Hong-Ye and Xiao-Guang were previously “office lovers.” His wife praises admirably: “I was particularly attracted by his attentive behavior when he is doing his research. Although I encountered a lot of obstacles in the process of falling in love with him, I’d never hesitated.”

Whereby, Li, Xiao-Guang was reborn and challenged the limits. He never gives up but keeps on trying, thus gaining the fame of being a patent champion, feeding back to the Group, and adhering to the benefit of the vulnerable groups. He deserves to be praised as the “Computer Wizard Rising from the Ashes,” and stood out among 2,723 recommended candidates from all over the world and earned him the “22nd Fervent Global Love of Lives Award 2019” from Taiwan’s Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation.

The Foundation welcomes all walks of life around the world at any time to recommend candidates of life warriors who possess the contexts of endeavors, love, braveness, and achievement.

Rising from the ashes, he is appreciated by Terry Guo as the “most beautiful person”
The Foxconn Group’s R&D Building has a special meaning to Xiao-Guang, which has dramatically changed his life 16 years ago. He became a member of Foxconn through an interview. Although the building looks old to him now, it is still spreading its warmth.

In his life, he has met many sincere people who helped him walk to hardships until today. Over the past 16 years, he has acted to prove that even if he is fingerless, he is no different from the ordinary people. He still returns those who have helped him and contributes to society with his untiring pair of hands.

After working for 16 years in Foxconn, Xiao-Guang clutches at the throat of fate and plays the most energetic sound of life. President Guo appreciates him as the “most beautiful person” of Foxconn.

Rising from the ashes and thriving Foxconn
Born in 1974, Xiao-Guang’s life is divided into two sections from the moment he entered the Foxconn gate 16 years ago. The front part is called suffering, and the latter patter is called glory.

In 1996, Xiao-Guang, who was studying in the Software Department of Shenzhen University, met an unexpected accidental gas leak, causing his parents dead, and he suffered from 76% severe burns over his body. He underwent more than 700 days and nights of treatments in hospitals, 15 minor and major surgeries, skin grafting, plastic surgery, wound dressing changes, etc. After the infernal reborn, both his hands were amputated with only one knuckle left. An originally computer wizard who had just started his life’s blueprint, but his life background had turned from colorful to black and white. Where should I go? He asked himself.

When Xiao-Guang was born in the early hours of the morning, his father thought of the light of dawn and named him “Xiao-Guang.” Perhaps, the name had brought good luck to Xiao-Guang when he was at rock bottom. In 2003, Xiao-Guang entered the Foxconn gate and ushered in the second sunlight.

“Although I’m disabled, I can take care of myself. I can do as well as everyone!” Xiao-Guang wrote on his resume. The Department Manager usually handles the interview matter for applicants of general employees in Foxconn.

After learning about Xiao-Guang’s particular circumstances, Mr. Jiang Hao-Liang, the General Manager of the Foxconn’s iDPBG business group, squeezed out his time during the intense travel trip before going to the United States and proposed to meet Xiao-Guang. “You’ve already gone through the catastrophic disaster and survived. I’m confident in you. Just do your best.” Under the encouragement of General Manager Jiang, Xiao-Guang stepped into the Foxconn door in October 2003 and joined the R&D Department of the iDPBD business group.

The resurgence of the “King of R&D”
“When I first came, I needed the medicated bath treatment. The company especially gave me a dormitory with a bathtub. I was reimbursed with tolls and medication fees every three months to let me go to Chongqing to get the medication.”

These preferences touched Xiao-Guang immensely. After learning that he comes from Chongqing, President Guo said to him meaningfully that he went to Chongqing in the 1980s. At that time, he picked a bag of luggage for less than a dollar. After going back a dozen years later, the cost had rarely changed. This is the gap between labor and work. Although your body has suffered severe injuries, you have a clever, pursuing and motivated brain. You can fight against all odds to succeed!

Desperately wanting to thank Foxconn, Xiao-Guang used to stay up late at night, treating the company as his home. With his special interest and expertise in UI interaction design, human engineering design, and other fields, Xiao-Guang completed the forefront cutting-edge products, such as displays, e-books, music players, digital photo frames, smartphones, etc. along with the R&D team members.

From 2004 to 2007, he won the “Annual Outstanding Contribution Award” from the Foxconn Group for four consecutive years and famed as the patent application champion. In January 2009, he received the title of “King of Inventions” by the Foxconn Group.

Today, Xiao-Guang has accumulated more than 600 patent applications and more than 200 patents. Since 2008, he has won the “May 1 Labor Medal of Guangdong Province,” “Guangdong Province Labor Day Model,” and “National Labor Model” for three consecutive years.

Many people marvel at how a person with physical disabilities can explode such a tremendous amount of energy. The Poem of the Old Man by Bing Xin, can perhaps make the best interpretation: Don’t just see the moment of glory of the winners, but understand that their success is the result of hard work and sacrifice, thus motivating us to learn from them and actively contribute and strive for the goal of success.

As the Manager of the R&D Department, Xiao-Guang has now moved from the consumer electronics field to the automation equipment development field. A person can walk fast, but a group of people can go far. Xiao-Guang hopes to use the knowledge he learned over the past 20 years to help Foxconn to strive along with young people around him. “The entire group is transforming to cope with the tremendous advancement of the industrial Internet nowadays. There is no time for us to wait; we must rely on the strength of the team to challenge the difficulties.”

Xiao-Guang’s work desk is written with a famous saying of Lei Feng: A drop of water will never dry up if it is put into the sea; a person can only be most powerful if he is integrated with the group enterprise.

His personal struggle history is also an excellent portrayal of the history of corporate struggle. Treat the wise to thrive, and accumulate the talents to become stronger. Under the inspiration of the people-oriented corporate spirit of Foxconn, hundreds of thousands of Xiao-Guang constitute an unbreakable community of destiny, and it will last forever.

I want to be like a normal person
In the early morning of August 26, 1996, the then 22-year-old Xiao-Guang’s fate was rewritten by a fire. Her parents died, more than 80% of his body got burned, 76% of which were severe burns.

The incident caused him to have one movable finger left and a disabled right leg. “My mouth was burnt and deformed into a small hole left then. When hungry, I could only suck instant noodles.”

“Every time I change the dressing, my flesh would stick to the gauze and caused me to faint every time. In times of the most desperate moment, I looked at the window and had only one thought, that was to jump down and get relieved.”

With the help of friends, relatives, and countless good people, Xiao-Guang regained his confidence: “I couldn’t live up to the concern and expectation of society. I must stand up and pay back to society.”

After the operations, Xiao-Guang returned to his hometown in Chongqing. He started to invent things from daily life. As he could not buckle up the buttons, he changed his shirts to be fastened by hook-and-loop tape. He also made “sock-wearing wizard,” “door-opening wizard,” bottle cap-opening wizard,” etc. “I want to live on my own like a normal person.”

Xiao-Guang was born in October 1974, joined Foxconn Technology Group in October 2003 and has been engaged in R&D work since then. If it were not the gas leak explosion incident in the summer of 1996, Xiao-Guang who was studying software engineering at Shenzhen University and full of ambitious then would possibly develop another kind of glory in his life.

He had drawn up detailed and specific plans for the future but was too late to face them and struck by a “catastrophic” evil luck instead. After the explosion and burns, he woke up in a coma, followed by nightmares one after another.

In more than two years, Xiao-Guang remembered that he had been shoving between the ward and operating room, undergoing 15 minor and major surgeries, suffering the terrible torments of hell, and agonizing skin grafting operations intertwined with tears and sweat, but he soon resumed his fighting spirit.

What made him remember the most was the 1997 Nurses’ Day (May 12). Xiao-Guang saw the unrecognizable self for the first time through the reflection of the shadowless lamp on the operating table. He was scared and completely desperate.

At that moment, I immediately went to the idea of killing myself. “Oh, Xiao-Guang! Think about your parents who have cultivated you to become an adult.”

“Oh, Xiao-Guang! Think about your sister who is borrowing money everywhere to save you, leaving her work and husband, and taking care of you full time. Can you bear to leave?”

“Without a pretty face, do you admit you’re incompetent, do you want to give up your favorite computer, do you want to quit a life that you yearn for?” His aunt who had been taking care of Xiao-Guang always opened up his mind and gradually made him feel calm.

A disabled iron man who never quits but challenges the destiny
To learn to live without hands and overcome the discrimination and prejudice of others, Xiao-Guang needed to start everything from the beginning. The pain of losing his parents, hopeless about the future, and helpless on everything, he stared at the wall of the ward blankly; everything seemed like a cold and gray world to him.

At that time, workers, students, retired old people, and many unknown good-hearted people came to the hospital to visit Xiao-Guang. They donated money, presented nutritious food, and encouraged him. Xiao-Guang began to warm up inside and said: “Oh yes! The doctors’ superb medical skills and everyone’s love have helped me gained a second life.”

“Since I’ve survived, I must live well to fulfill my dream of opening a software company and accomplish many of my wishes that have not been realized. I must stand tall and brave to face the odds and carve out a niche of my own!” Xiao-Guang, who is energetic and optimistic, set up his “rebirth” goals!”

After receiving eight minor and major surgeries in Hangzhou Plastic Surgery Hospital, plus the former rescue operations, and five to six skin grafting operations in Shenzhen, Xiao-Guang has already developed specific resistance to anesthetics. The doctor said that surgical treatments have come to an end; he has to rely on his own to heel, recover, and an intensive rehabilitation program.

Thinking that he could finally go home, Xiao-Guang was very happy, but another “abyss,” the terrible painful recovery stage was waiting for him.

After lying for more than a year, his blood has been flowing horizontally. After sitting up, the inability to sit steadily was just a small matter; the subsequent first burst of dizziness was big trouble. The worst thing was to learn to walk again. Xiao-Guang’s capillaries in the thighs were damaged and deformed due to deep skin burns, resulting in blood flow blockage.

Every time he put his legs down on the bedside, and after the blood from his body has flown to his feet, the pressure generated from backflow pressure would act like tens of thousands of needles stabbing on his legs violently with agonizing pains. He would quickly retract his legs, with tears running like a bubbling spring on the bed. The agony would let him unbearable for another second.

For the instinctual actions like learning to walk, taking a spoon to eat, writing with a pen that the ordinary people are used to would only allow the “reborn” Xiao-Guang to use his only finger knuckle. He endured the pains that the ordinary people could not imagine, practicing them over and over again.

After seeing his progress, his sister encouraged and cheered him up continuously: “Look! How comfortable it is if you eat by yourself. Now you can decide whether to eat the rice or the vegetable first with the spoon. How wonderful it is.”

The tough Xiao-Guang always worked hard on the bedside, enduring the pains, and crying and crunching his teeth at the same time, and counting 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and so forth to take a new step in his life.

After more than two months of working out, his sister accompanied Xiao-Guang to walk, taking along a wooden bench to let him walk for a few steps, rest for two minutes, and then walk for a few steps more. He could finally reach the hospital’s garden in the front yard. Since reborn, it was the first time he came so close looking at the beautiful flowers and the green grass.” It’s so good to be alive!” At that moment, Xiao-Guang had a more in-depth experience than other people.

On March 1, 1998, Xiao-Guang returned to his hometown at Chongqing and began a new life of rehabilitation at home. A nanny was hired to take care of his daily chores, but every time he had to wait for the nanny to buy food before he could wash his face, dress up, and get out of bed with the nanny’s help.

He remembered once that when the nanny was not at home, Xiao-Guang said: “Something I need was in the living room, and the shoes were taken out by the nanny to bask at the balcony. I had no choice but to slide slowly to the ground and climbed for more than 10 minutes.”

“Then, I held on to the table legs to stand up again, grabbed the thing I want, spent more than 10 minutes to crawl back slowly, and returned to the bed cold and tired. I cried, remembering how pathetic I was!”

“More than 20 years old, I still have to claw and grab something. How happy I was when I had my mother and father around. After tired of crying, I thought to myself that everything has to depend on myself now! What’s the use of crying?”

“If you’re not brave, no one will get strong for you on behalf. If you want to be reborn again, you must redouble your strength!” After that incident, Xiao-Guang worked harder and harder. The road ahead was still very long, and he must be persistent despite the pains and tiredness and worked hard as much as he could to live independently.

Xiao-Guang asked his relatives to find friends to install big plastic bus handrails on the walls of the house so that he could practice walking at any time. To live independently, you must overcome the problems of wearing clothes (fasten up the buttons) and socks. While eating and sleeping then, Xiao-Guang always thought about the solutions?

After many actual tests of using the bamboo tube, aluminum tube, and other materials, he successfully developed the “socks sleeve” made of plastic sewer pipe, and he replaced the cloth buttons with hook-and-loop tape for quick fastening. Despite these small improvements, they have brought great freedom for him!

During that time, Xiao-Guang was very happy! Initially taking care of him around the clock, the nanny changed to cook and wash the clothes for him during the daytime.

“The simplest things like eating, dressing up, and wearing socks on my own seem very ordinary for the normal people. Once you have lost those abilities, you would realize how precious they are. When I lost and recovered the skills, nobody would understand the joy they've brought to me. I can’t use the proper words to describe it.”

I was exhausted every day at that time, but it was very fulfilling. As I was learning to walk and reading books, I would try my best to replenish the computer knowledge I had lagged. Xiao-Guang said when he called up her sister.

Seven desks in the living room to struggle for life
It had been more than half a year since Xiao-Guang returned to Chongqing, he could shuttle between the living room and the bedroom holding the handrails. The source of living expenses in Chongqing was mainly the $1,000 RMB that his sister remitted to him.

In mid-1999, Xiao-Guang applied for a subsidy from the government; he received a “monthly living allowance” of $969 RMB after reviewing his application.

When I first received it, the staff told him: “You’re not allowed to use the air conditioner, mobile phone, and other luxury goods; otherwise, you’ll be disqualified for the allowance.” On the way back with the subsidy, Xiao-Guang felt very contradictory and uncomfortable!

“My sister has just got married. For the sake of looking after me, she pushes off the idea of having a baby, has a mortgage to pay and a very stressful family to run. Initially thought that I could stop using my sister’s money after receiving the subsidy, but the national subsidy standard and restrictions are meant to encourage us to be self-reliant and self-sufficient,” Xiao-Guang thought.

It is not terrible to be without healthy limbs and a healthy body, the more shocking thing is to quit and not to work hard. There are a lot of ideas to make money, such as name card designing, computer repairing, open the Internet cafe, etc. Those ideas appeared in Xiao-Guang’s mind all the time then!

He had no capital to invest in the big idea, and his body was not fit to go around. When Xiao-Guang was confused and helpless, his father’s former colleague called up Xiao-Guang’s sister. “Has Xiao-Guang got better already? Can he still work on the computer? We can send some software development work to him.”

Being confused and helpless, Xiao-Guang saw that as hope. He cherished it and redoubled his efforts. He woke up at 6 am every day and immediately plunged into “battle.” When he was tired, he squatted on the computer desk and then continued to get busy until 10 to 11 pm.

As he was too busy writing the programs, his junior high school students helped him post small advertisements of “College Student Seeking Part Time Job” on the bulletin boards in Chongqing University, and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications. The living room at home was placed with seven desks arranging in a circle.

Not only did the money earned by writing programs enough to cover his living expenses, but also allowed him to have enough money to buy books and technology products he wanted, and changed old furniture and electrical appliances at home. He felt his struggle had brought him happiness and joy.

Not only could Xiao-Guang support himself in his own life, he no longer needed to rely on the “relief fund” to live, but also became the leader of the R&D team to lead more than 20 part-time university students.

Although Xiao-Guang is “unrecognizable physically,” but he has stood up strong spiritually.

However, the road to life is always full of twists and turns. After being enriched and happy for busy working for more than two years, the Internet economy experienced a rapid anomaly expansion (the “Internet economy bubble” broke out in 2002).

Xiao-Guang’s first venture that was too small to be named as a small company was forced to close down. He doesn’t smoke, and his body doesn’t allow him to drink either. He passed a day as if it were a year then as if sitting on a needle felt. This was the best sentence he could express for the dilemma he faced at that time. Every day at home, he played the Liu Huan’s song “Re-start Again” over and over again: “All the yesterday’s honors have become a distant memory. I work hard spending half of my lifetime, but again I have to go into the storm tonight. If the heart is in a dream, there is still true love between heaven and earth. Seeing success and failure in life is just a matter of starting it all over again from the beginning...” It became the only thing that Xiao-Guang wanted to do then. After just taking off, I had to close down the software company abruptly. After gaining some experience (video algorithm) in programming, would I simply give up? Xiao-Guang was full of unwillingness!

“Xiao-Guang, have you thought of finding a job outside? Shenzhen Foxconn is urgently looking for software development talents. Do you want to try?” “Xiao-Guang, use your disability certificate to open an Internet café and make money quickly.” “ Xiao-Guang, don’t be so tired, rely on your computer technology to open a studio, engage in photography, re-edit PS, it’s also very profitable to help people repairing the computers.”

Suggestions from friends and classmates kept echoing in Xiao-Guang’s ears. Xiao-Guang recalled: “Isn’t there is a saying that pick yourself up from where you’ve fallen? My parents lived frugally and bought me the computer and then sent me to university. They wanted me to be a talented person and then contribute to the country and society and be something.” While thinking, he silently got up to pack his belongings. He decided to apply to work in Foxconn.

He browsed a lot of information about Foxconn on the Internet and looked at the company profile on the website some 10 times. He was full of admiration, curiosity, and expectation for the management method created by President Guo, building an IT subcontracting kingdom step by step from scratch.

If he could go to work in this big international company, if he could work in a company led by such a powerful boss, if he could learn... At the age of 30 then, Xiao-Guang would get excited upon thinking these imaginations! My friend who introduced me to the interview also reminded me that: “This company has strict requirements. The elites inside are all famous workaholics in the industry. You must be mentally prepared.”

Although he replied: “It’s nothing, I’m not afraid.” But at that time, he was totally unprepared mentally. What would they ask in the interview? Would the colleagues discriminate against me? Was he competent enough?

Devastated by the big fire, Xiao-Guang had walked a difficult road to be self-employed. However, he could not maintain the business as it was not making money and closed it down in infinite resilience and embarrassment.

Xiao-Guang cherished the rare opportunity in front of him very much as he understood that it was an ideal job he liked most, and most capable of realizing his life. Foxconn is an international company that he can contact with high-tech products and learn the latest technology. He must go all out! He prayed silently and repeatedly that it was a fulfillment, hopefully, that “you would get good fortune after surviving in that big disaster.”

Could his conditions be accepted? Would the colleagues discriminate against me? In life, Xiao-Guang would sometimes receive a “different” gaze from others. He once tried waiting for more than an hour in the rain, and yet no driver was willing to take him.

“Would Foxconn accept me?” With a feeling of restlessness, Xiao-Guang didn’t go out for three days. He stayed in his sister’s house, compiling the work experience and development projects of the past few years into explanations and pictures. He finished the PPT report consisting more than 40 pages. He did his best to make the most comprehensive preparations for the interview.

His friend drove Xiao-Guang and his sister, passing Mingzi from Meilinguan, and heading towards Foxconn Longhua Science Park, thus starting a new journey of his life.

“Although I’m disabled, I can take care of myself. I can do as well as others!” Xiao-Guang began to introduce himself. A Department Manager or Manager usually handle the interview matter for applicants of general employees in Foxconn.

When learning about Xiao-Guang’s unique experience, Jiang Hao-Liang, the General Manager of Foxconn’s iDPBG business group took time off to do a personal interview with Xiao-Guang during his tight schedule to go for a business trip to the United States.

Seeing Jiang Hao-Liang, Xiao-Guang felt his warmth and friendliness. Xiao-Guang recalled: General Manager Jiang walked into the conference room in an easy-going manner. His eyes were peaceful and trusting. Throughout the one hour of Xiao-Guang’s briefing, he listened carefully and did not interrupt at all.

Before leaving, he even patted Xiao-Guang’s shoulder and said: “Young man, there is no doubt that you’ve persisted through so many sufferings and difficulties, as long as you work hard, I believe that you could be something in Foxconn. Please don’t hesitate for what you need in life, and the company will solve it wholeheartedly.”

In October 2003, Xiao-Guang joined the software R&D Department of the imaging product group and officially became a member of the Foxconn family. Taking into account the exceptional circumstances of Xiao-Guang, and to facilitate his work and life, the General Affairs Department specially rented a community room with a bathtub (convenient to take the Chinese herbal bath) and set up a “green corridor” (equipped with an elevator and air conditioning) for him in the office space.

In addition to the “preferential treatment” in both life and working conditions, the company’s supervisor did not reduce his job performance requirement standards.

The supervisor’s equal treatment among all colleagues has inversely let Xiao-Guang unleash the psychological load and let him feel less stressful. Working overtime with other colleagues, attending meetings together, going to the production line to make arguing reviews, Xiao-Guang soon entered his job role.

Returning home after a busy day of work and taking a break after dinner, Xiao-Guang would throw himself in learning again to enrich his knowledge. Surfing the Internet and reading are his daily compulsory courses, which would take several hours at one time.

After skin grafting, his legs have been healing very slowly. The skin would shrink, stretching the whole leg like wrapping it with gauze. It is stuffy and itchy. In winter, the skin at the back of knees would crack, and it is painful whenever he bends his legs.

In the summertime, the serum would ooze out slowly. In the quiet of the night, when Xiao-Guang prepares to sleep, the serum would exudate out of the skin and always sticks to the pants “I’ve to sprinkle the skin with the showerhead with warm water for about 15 minutes, allowing full infiltration of the water and slowly peeling off the skin from the pants. I've to do it very slowly.”

When learning online and focusing, time passes very quickly to allow him to forget about the pains and itching in time (the itchiness is like countless of little ants “crawling” under the skin, you can only pat but never scratch; otherwise, the skin would crack and bleed and hard to heel for a month). “It’s not itchy when I’m focusing. Isn’t that good?”

This would help Xiao-Guang to turn bitterness into happiness. Being positive and optimistic, Xiao-Guang would like to summarize and share his rehabilitation experience.

In 2004, when the price of LCD monitors was still relatively high then, Foxconn decided to introduce the self-branded panel “Impulse.” To achieve the goal, it needed to increase production capacity and quality. Each manufacturing process and inspection station had to be inspected one by one to observe the operators’ operation and analyze the data reports, discover the problems, and make improvement countermeasures through research.

Display panel detection is most time-consuming. The quality is unstable following the fatigue and mood fluctuations of the testers. The development of an “image automatic detection system” would solve the “bottleneck” problem of the stations. Xiao-Guang started to lead the team to innovate.

For ready-made equipment that could not be bought online, the team members would make them on their own; and for relevant theoretical data that were not available, the team members would conduct self-check. Xiao-Guang and his colleagues worked side by side. During daytime, they shuttled between Foxconn Park and SEG Electronics Market under the high temperature of 40°C to purchase the hardware equipment, and then wrote and debugged the programs in the lab at night.

Due to an absence of respiratory pores on the grafted skin of Xiao-Guang body, the normal skin on his back and scalp would sweat profoundly. If he does not replenish water in time, he would dehydrate easily and get a heatstroke. To produce the detection system as quickly as possible, he still needed to go up and down the building even without a lift to test and collect the samples. Xiao-Guang could not care much about his disabled body but climbed up and down with his colleagues. After reaching the top of the building, he would almost collapse and hurriedly drink a large bottle of water to replenish moisture.

Hard work pays off, after one month of hard work from scratch, the team led by Xiao-Guang launched the first unattended “fully automatic display visual inspection system” for the production line. It has helped to save manpower and improve quality by more than 30%. He won the Annual Outstanding Contribution Award in the same year.

Regarding the new fashion technology products, Xiao-Guang always pays great attention to observe, study the details, and learn to collect the latest industry information and technological trends. “He never plays mobile games. While taking the lift, he would take snapshots of the control consoles, and think while walking, eating, etc.” The colleagues who know about Xiao-Guang summarize that he is obsessed with R&D.

Even in the middle of the night, if a sudden “thought” flashes across his mind, Xiao-Guang would immediately sit up and record it in his mobile phone notebook, for fear that the spark of inspiration would vanish.

Pieces of patents, product analysis reports, UI design plans, etc. are born one after another under his constant pondering.

“I enjoy the process of creation where everyone would brainstorm to clear things up after racking our brains. The process is tough though, but you get a great sense of accomplishment. I’m particularly proud and satisfied if I can see my creative ideas being integrated into the products.”

Since 2004, the number of patent applications submitted by Xiao-Guang has entered the top 10 of the Group’s personal rankings for five consecutive years.

In 2004, he won the Annual Outstanding Contribution Award from the Group. In 2004, his patent application achievement also achieved the second place among the top 10. In 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, he received the Annual Outstanding Contribution Award from the Group for four consecutive years, and claimed as a patent application champion.

In recognition of Xiao-Guang’s contribution to the Group in patent applications, President Guo of the Group especially rewarded him $1 million RMB in 2007.

For more than a decade, he has been actively promoting a “cooperative operation” model to place equal emphasis on R&D and patent applications. To date, he has cumulatively filed 600 patent applications and has obtained more than 200 authorized patents from the official intellectual property offices from China, the United States, and other countries in electronic products, human engineering, environmental protection, energy saving, autonomous driving, and other related fields.

Xiao-Guang has helped the Foxconn Group to win a large number of customer orders, accumulating more than $10 billion RMB worth in economic value.

The beautiful phoenix of the spring rain continues to write legends
After spending many years of experience in frontline R&D, it has allowed Xiao-Guang to deeply realize that technological innovation is a protracted war. We must continue to learn intensively, improve our abilities, always grasp the opportunities, and understand the customer needs and market development trends before we can become invincible.

Named after him, “Li Xiao-Guang Labor Model Innovation Studio” was officially listed in 2016. The strength of one person is limited. After learning and growing in the Group for more than 10 years, Xiao-Guang knows the importance of teamwork. “I would like to summarize the skills and cumulative lessons (methods, processes, forms, etc.) I learned in Foxconn in the past 16 years to allow my colleagues and newcomers to master and surpass me in five years, or even less.”

Xiao-Guang is focusing on a layout to implement his talent cultivation plan.

Xiao-Guang cherishes the heart-to-heat talk. His hard-working, proactive and optimistic attitude, and special challenging and creativity characteristics have infected and driven the people around him, whether they are masters in the 50s or greenhorn engineers in the 90s (just graduated), Xiao-Guang is always surrounded by a group of people, colleagues, good comrades, good apprentices, good friends, etc.

“We have a saying in China: A broken body isn’t a broken person. In my mind, he’s much healthier and more outstanding than everyone in this room, and he is more capable of accepting challenges.”

“To do things, you must act like him. Although he has suffered external traumatic injuries, he never admits defeated! Everyone seems to pay attention on his appearance and outlook. It’s wrong! You must pay attention to his connotations and mindset, see if he’s serious, responsible, and mindful in doing things.” In the fifth year of joining Foxconn, Xiao-Guang went on stage to receive the patent application “Champion” award at the “2007 Patent Innovation Awards Ceremony” from President Guo, where he was praised onsite. Xiao-Guang can still freshly remember what President Guo said then: “The credit for today’s achievements does not belong to me alone, but the joint efforts of my colleagues and our team.”

“I’m moved by what President Guo said, inspiring me to move forward. I’m grateful to what President Guo, the leaders of the Group, colleagues, society, and many “good-hearted people” who have helped me. You’ve made me. I want to do my best to return the society and the company.”

His beloved parents, handsome face, warm family, and beautiful memories all engulfed in the fire that night, leaving him with serious injuries. After 16 years, he has reversed his life and miraculously become a “patent champion,” and even married a beautiful wife, has a lovely daughter and a happy family.

Xiao-Guang is well aware of the hard-won happiness. Individual strength is very small. He realized how important it was when someone stretched out a warm helping hand and gave a caring eye to him at the critical moment, which has even changed his life directly.

Over the years, Xiao-Guang has been actively donating money and materials for the families in need in the disaster-stricken areas. He has subsidized and cared for the treatment and rehabilitation of burn patients, hoping to do his part to help them regain their confidence, recover better, and stand up earlier.

Xiao-Guang and his family are also members of the Volunteer Union. They have set an example personally and teach their daughter to “help others to help themselves, and it’s more blessed to give than to receive.”

In 2007, he donated $10,000 RMB each to the Guizhou flood-helping hero Li King-Long and a college student Wang Hou-Lan’s tuition and living expenses, and $5,000 RMB to the leukemia worker of the Group. In 2008, he donated all the $5,000 RMB reward he won at “May 1 Labor Medal” to the Wenchuan earthquake’s disaster area, and even donating $8,000 RMB to the disaster area each year.

Although the tangible flesh is very fragile, the invisible mind can be shaped, hastened, and can become mighty powerful! In addition to his work, Xiao-Guang has changed himself into a “mentor of love,” went to schools and units to share his growth experience, let more people to see and believe that “miracle” is around if only we have a strong inner heart, courageous enough, cherish our life, and treasure our current happiness that appears to look plain.

On June 8, 2018, at the 30th Anniversary of Foxconn’s “Employees’ Fun Club,” Xiao-Guang act as a host to crack jokes merrily on the stage in front of more than 30,000 people, and the activity was synchronously broadcast through a connection system. He used such method to express his gratitude to the colleagues for their help and care, told everyone that he lives well and is very happy, and urged them to go beyond themselves and challenge the impossible!

Xiao-Guang is a phoenix reborn in the fire. His flying milestone has let us see the value of life and the infinite energy. His road to the future is no longer alone. His wife and daughter are both the armor of his soul and the driving force of his journey. Holding gratefulness and dreams, he works hand-in-hand with his colleagues to challenge destiny, and continues to transcend beyond the ordinary and create miracles!
