Breaking the chains of life from the prison
Lin Chian-Long, born in 1956 in a miner’s family at Keeluhng Yuehmei Mt. He didn’t like learning at his childhood, but was immersed in gambling activities. He opened a Casino at 18 years old, but was prosecuted for “hooligan behavior” and prisoned in 23 years old. During 5-year prison life, he experienced a physical and psychological torture, but finally awakened and started to think over his existence, so he endeavored to climb up the ladder of knowledge and search for his direction in the future life.
He studied hard in Hong De School, or even read books in toilets. 3 years later, he was repatriated to the police HQ, where he was admitted to English Department of Soochow University, and studied with surprising willpower. After that, he obtained the doctor’s degree of English language literature in the University of Michigan. In 1992, he returned to teach in Soochow University.
Although he experienced a depressed life, he dreamed of going to college and becoming a poet. His dream was finally achieved, since he was awarded T.otto Nall literature creation prize and Chen Xiuxi poem prize. And, he already published six collections of poems: “Collection of Poems of Lin Chian-Long”, ““Collection of Poems of Guan Marng Flower in Spring”, “Collection of Haiku of Lin Chian-Long”, “Haiku of Life”, “Eye of Prison Life”, “New Century of Animal”, along with “Collection of Poems for 100th Anniversary of Soochow University”.
