Living as the last day
Lin Shu-Yi, female, born in 1988 in Yunlin, a student of Hu Wei Senior High School. When she was only 3 months, she was diagnosed of JDSMA--an incurable disease. So, she spent most of her time in the hospital in the past 16 years, and nearly became entirely paralyzed. But, she never felt despairing, and faced the fact and met the challenge optimistically.
However, she cherished every opportunity to study hard in Hu Wei Elementary School, Chung De Junior High School or Hu Wei Senior High School. Being optimistic and friendly, she achieved good performance in reciting, composition and drawing competitions, and won good reputation in her school.
She couldn’t stand up and walk when she was four years old. But, all doctors couldn’t cure the disease. In such case, she could face this fact and comforted her parents Lin Fu-Sheng, Lu Su-Hua and sister Lin Hsiao-Chiao. On the day of the final examination when she was in Grade 1 of Hu Wei Elementary School, she was suffered from serious fever. But, she insisted on finishing the examination and got the highest mark. Then she was sent to the intensive care unit in hospital. But she never regretted about her behavior.
Since the disease became worse at 10 years old, she nearly died of this disease 13 times. To our surprise, she wakened from death, and told her mother, “I cannot die, my dream hasn’t been realized yet.” Though her body became weaker, her willpower to challenge the extremity of life became stronger. She served as a volunteer in public welfare activities for the disadvantaged, setting an example of living with hope.
Lin Shu-Yi treated every day as the last day and tried to challenge the extremity of life while safeguarding the dignity of life. The story of Lin Shu-Yi was highly recognized by “2004 Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal Review Committee: of Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation. On February 23, 2004, Lin Shu-Yi was awarded 2004 Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal. At the same time, an exhibition of “love makes a bright life—painting the dignity of life from outstanding angel Lin Shu-Yi” was held to encourage the struggle for disease and life of hope.
Unfortunately, Lin Shu-Yi passed away on April 3, 2004. In order to realize her unfulfilled wish, her mother Lu Su-Hua and sister Lin Hong-Shiou, along with the winner of Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal—an antidrug hero Juan from Columbia, planted trees of life and spilled her bone ashes at CKS Memorial Hall on May 25, 2004, under the sponsorship of Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation. During June 17~25, 2004, her English version: “I Still Have One Leg” was published. The story of Her Lin Shu-Yi and other 39 heroes was widely covered by Australia ABS.
At that time, Lin Shu-Yi’s teacher Huang Guo-Chong at Hu Wei Senior High School was deeply moved, and then wrote a book named “As long as I am alive—the story of Lin Shu-Yi”, which was sold by Hu Wei Senior High School and Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation and donated to “Lin Shu-Yi Loving Life Prize” with NT$ 207,600. Since 2007, Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation, Hu Wei Senior High School, and Lin Shu-Yi’s parents will grant Love of Life Prize on April 3 of every year---the anniversary of Lin Shu-Yi.
