Look at world with optimism; face the future with courage
      Born 1986 in Hualien, Sung Ching-Lin is a student in Tsu Chi University. She was a quiet and gentle girl who showed optimism and active learning at school in her childhood. Life has unexpected turn for her. When she was a sophomore in junior high school, bone cancer in her right knee started to give her trouble. After several tests and diagnoses, 19 chemotherapies, three surgeries, she almost lost her leg. The doctor had no choice but to replace the joint in her right leg with an “artificial joint” . She wrote in her diary: “Chou Ta-Kuan has one leg to stand on the earth. I have one joint and I want to walk all over the beautiful world. “ 

      During the difficult medical treatment, she dropped out of school for one year. She lived and self-taught in hospital. She passed the examination and entered the affiliated high school of Tsu Chi University. Three years in high school, she always had excellent academic achievement in the class; and she was recognized the model volunteer in Tsu Chi Hospital after class. Master Cheng Yen praises her as “Tsu Chi Angel” who shows the hope of Tsu Chi’s education.

      When class is over, Sung Ching-Li is always the first to arrive Tzu Chi Hospital Xin Lian hospital section which is for children cancer patients. She helps with massaging for the terminal stage patients. She is the best counselor at children cancer hospital beds and shares the experience with patients. She told them that “chemotherapy” is a fearful enemy; but at a critical point in life, you have to fight it no matter what. Sometimes, it will send the killer “cranberry” to damage the cells, good or bad, in your body. Its most violent weapon is “platinum” which would cause seriously uncomfortable vomit. It is like what the Chou Ta-Kuan suggested “War of Cancer” is our only war. Tomorrow when the war is over, the world will have peace. 

      Of course, everyone has their moment; Sung Ching-Lin is no exception. She needs the support from her family during the days when she is in therapy. The endless care from loving parents is the best medicine and protection for the souls, except the advanced medical technology. 

      She especially salutes to the children cancer patients and their parents. She said every child and their parents are God and Buddha if there are God and Buddha because they shoulder the burden of pain for all the children in the world so that most children are healthy and happily growing up. It is like what Chou Ta-Kuan suggested in “Good News”: Father and mother are in the room with me and they tell me great news. Science army troops from the sky and new medicine angle are coming to the Earth! Wow! The sky is so bright at night; they are announcing good news. 

      Sung Ching-Lin is thankful that she entered the affiliated high school in Tsu Chi University. This is a high school which is established by Master Cheng Yen who collected everyone’s love. Being the most excellent student in the class, she represented the school in the third Olympic Contest in Geography and got an award of excellence. She is learning and growing under the care of teachers. In addition to the regular curriculum, the training and practice of “life care” is also a lesson to learn. Since she once fights for her life, “Have passion of life; care for others” becomes her motto. Master Cheng Yen’s “Words of Silent Thought” inspires her. Every word and sentence is turned into an individual action to help people. She is determined for the recruiting test of Department of Social Work, Tsu Chi University so that she would have the opportunity to help terminal ill children and patients.
