Call out and die, than be silent and live
Wang Man-Tang was born on March 18, 1950 in Taichung City . He studied in the Medical Department of the National Defense Medical Center (NDMC), American Academy of Optometry (ACO), and Health Medicine Research Institute of Idaho State University (ISU). His prior experiences include the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Optometrist at Taipei First Clinic, Director in the Department of Optometry at the Shu-Ren College of Medicine and Management, visiting professor at the Department of Optometry in Chun Shan Medical University, writer for the Ministry of Education Occupational Skills Encyclopedia Optometry Chapter, current professor at the Department of Optometry in Jen-The Junior College of Medicine, Nursing and Management; and Optometry Advisor for the “Modern Optical Magazine.” What is even more commendable is that in August 2000, when he was diagnosed with nasopharynx cancer at the NTU Hospital , he still faced death with a smile. He told himself: “Even if I am just a flicker of candlelight, I will still shine for the people that need light.”
Ever since Professor Wang was diagnosed with cancer, he started to have a great goal in life – to take care of the visual health of the public, he triumphed over cancer, enriched his own life, he would rather call out and die than be silent and live. He has strived to build the foundation for optometry in Taiwan , transforming the pain of cancer into the strength to write, fighting cancer for over six years. He has worked night and day and finally finished eleven books of “Clinical Optometry, they were “specialty books discussing how to care for the eyes, which shocked the realm of optometry. Therefore, everyone calls him the Father of Taiwan Optometry Education, fighting for the visual health of the public with his life. When domestic and foreign doctors helplessly declared that his life was over, he still faced death with a smile, he used every minute and second, with his last breath he traveled back and forth, for the “Optometrist Law” that was lying around in the Legislative Yuan over a dozen years.
For the “Optometrist Law,” Professor Wang would rather call out and die, and uphold the visual health of the public, triumphing over cancer, enriching his life, transforming cancer into love, using love to write, and building a foundation for Optometry education, no wonder he is called the “Diplomat of light.”
