The first cancer battling cardinal in the world
Spreading the good news in the face of death
The cancer fighting cardinal was born Puyang County, Hebei Province, China on December 3, 1923. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1946, ordained in 1955, went to Rome in 1959, and received his doctor degree. In 1979 he became a bishop, and in 1998 he became a cardinal; a first in Taiwan and the 5th for Chinese worldwide. He was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma at the age of 85.

He was shocked when he learned the news However, after praying, he decided to change his mind set from "why me" to "why not me". He has been treating cancer as a gift and an angel from God without being anxious or in fear. With his few remaining years on this earth he started a series of public service activities called "Walk through Taiwan and Care for life".

He uses his sickness as the tool for spreading love, for witnessing for God, for challenging his limit in serving. He's living out the last of his days in love, compassion and hope. He is the first cancer battling cardinal in the world.
