Two Thousand Patients With Rare Autoimmune Disease are Left Optionless, Seeking Medical Team Formation
Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation invited two awardees of the Love of Lives award yesterday to share their stories at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Lai Chih-Ming and Zhu Yu-Hao; a street performer who is completely blind. Lai Chih-Ming delivered a speech, hoping to motivate 2.5 million patients with multiple sclerosis, while highlighting the thoughts and feelings of 2000 patients in Taiwan battling this illness; saying: “We all wish that a bright minded doctor for rare illnesses is able to form a PTCA team bringing hope to patients”.
Lai Chih-Ming has many patents and is a semi-conductor optoelectronic engineer. When he received wide attention he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, causing paralysis in the lower half of the body. Despite this, he did not lose hope! He searched for medical information globally while monitoring his own health status and discussed with doctors about the possibility of performing surgery in Taiwan. In 2010, he set an example as the first patient to receive successful PTCA treatment in Taiwan.
His surgery was performed by Professor Hu Han-Hua and his team. Professor Hu Han-Hua is the director of Taipei’s Department of Neurology Neurological Institute. However, after Professor Hu’s retirement, this team was disbanded, leaving patients optionless. Yesterday Lai Chih-Ming attended this event to speak on behalf of other patients.
